‘Porn’ from Nanay Mo

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Nanay Mo – Porn from Paolo Abrihan on Vimeo.

Yes, it’s ‘Porn’ from Nanay Mo.

You read that right! After placing third in Greenhills Sessionistas back in 2008, Nanay Mo has been hard at work with writing more songs and further improving their style of rock and roll that resonates with a lot of old school influences as well as a light-hearted flair about it. The band is currently working on their full length album but for now, you might as well enjoy Nanay Mo with ‘Porn’, right?

We also have this really cool new video from Nyco Maca + Playground. Check out Turn My Head.

Nyko Maca + Playground is known in the Filipino music underground scene for their fusion of Filipino pop and Brazilian rhythms. In the band’s own words, “…it has always been natural for Nykó and PLAYgROUND to think holistically, play intuitively, and sound cyclical.” The band is composed of Madz Abubakar, Rick Sanchez and Alvin Cornista.

Lastly, we have another video from the most kick-ass Archipelago. We added Black Box to their already impressive library of great music.

We wanted a name that would speak of who we are, where we’re from, what we’re about and why you should listen. Each of us, simultaneously common and diverse, have our own stories—like islands have their own histories—which form our music. As we are part of the great story of the world, our music belongs to the world; one that is at a distance, an Archipelago

Paramita’s Gatilyo

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Did you guys go to Paramita’s Liyab album launch at SaGaijo last August 4? If not, you missed out a lot of fantastic music. Don’t worry, though, Splintr.com’s got you covered.

We are proud to present the latest video to stream out of Splintr.com – Paramita’s “Gatilyo.”

Gatilyo

If you’re a Paramita fan, you’re going to enjoy this video immensely. And for the uninitiated, Paramita is Ria Bautista on vocals, Marco de Leon on guitar, Alsey Cortez on bass. Gatilyo is the first single from the Liyab album.

Paramita is back with a new hard-hitting sound, a more focused direction and with a video for the single “Gatilyo”.

“‘Gatilyo’ is one of the most dramatic and melancholic tunes in our new song line up. And it has the potential to reach a diverse audience with its simplicity and honesty”, says a very excited Ria Bautista.

The music video projects a stripped down Paramita from their usual performance level. Ideally, the simplicity of “Gatilyo” in sound, lyrics and music video is to reach out to the majority of listeners who appreciate these simple things.

“Gatilyo” is the first single from their upcoming third album entitled “Liyab,” which is expected to be released in all Odyssey outlets nationwide by mid August 2010 under Blaster Music. The album “Liyab” boasts 10 tracks of all original tunes.

Awesomer Covers

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Yesterday, we presented a list of pretty good cover songs. While those songs were great, we’re back with an even BETTER list. So, strap in and prepare to experience an eargasmic treat.

Nine Inch Nails’ Dead Souls

In 1981, Joy Division released a song called Dead Souls in their album, Still. It was written probably around in 1979. Check out that wicked bass line.

In 1994, in The Crow soundtrack, Nine Inch Nails released a cover to Dead Souls. It has a harder edge and the vocal performance was just top notch.

The way it was used in The Crow was incredibly surreal, too, and there is a prevalent argument that the soundtrack can easily make or break a good scene.

Living Colour’s Sunshine of Your Love

Eric Clapton and Cream are arguably some of the greatest musical acts of all time. It’s hard to deny, however, that their songs are timeless classics. They’ve produced many great songs and they’ve spawned even more remakes, revivals and covers. If that isn’t a mark of a true musical genius, we don’t know what is. A cover that stands out quite vividly is Living Colour’s Sunshine of Your Love not because it’s the most widely known Clapton cover because it probably isn’t but because of the unique take on the song.

Here’s Living Colour’s cover.

The cover is as faithful as it would be expected of Living Colour and they take the song to a whole other level of awesome. If you’ll excuse me, I need to wipe my face off the floor because the guitar solo just melted it off.

Deftones’ Jealous Guy

Now that’ve we’ve opened up that can of worms that is the topic of musical geniuses, it’s hard not to mention THE musical genius – John Lennon. John Lennon has written a lot of moving iconic songs that have been covered so many times, some people don’t even realize they were John Lennon originals. The covered song was first released in 1971 and has been covered a staggering 92 times. It is none other than the massively popular Jealous Guy.

As an iTunes exclusive track, Deftones became one of the 92 artists to cover Jealous Guy. How is it? Well, give it a listen and you tell us.

Didn’t expect that, did you? Yeah.

Johnny Cash’s Hurt and Rusty Cage

There is no rule that ever said that younger guys should cover the older guys. It just doesn’t work like that, and look, Johnny Cash took Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden classics, made them his own and moved thousands of people to tears and elation.

Considering that Mr. Cash had already passed away, these songs now stir a barrage of mixed emotions in people. Rest in peace, man in black.
