Artist of the Month for June – SLAPSHOCK

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Slapshock, the hardest rocking band in the country today is Splintr.com‘s artist of the month for June!

Slapshock

Normally compared to the biggest bands of the late 90′s like Korn, Limp Bizkit and Deftones, Slapshock has been tearing up the Philippine music scene with a loud and angry sound distinctly theirs, which is a combination of new-metal, funk, rap metal and hip hop.

Slapshock first got together start on February 14, 1996. The date is quite ironic, isn’t it? They were initially composed of vocalist Reynold Munsayac, bassist Lee Nadela, guitarists Leandro Ansing and Jerry Basco, and drummer Chi Evora.

Eventually, Jamir Garcia replaced Munsayac and that’s when Slapshock got their trademarked rapcore music.

A huge fan base in the underground music scene followed Slapshock like a religion. They released their first album under EMI in 1999, 4th Degree, which did exceedingly well among the Filipino youth despite the album’s criticism from conservative parents. They’ve since released 5 more albums – Headtrip, Project 11-41, Novena, Silence and Cariño Brutal – and 2 compilation albums, Back to the 2 Inch and Recollection.

They had received numerous awards and recognition over the years, including nominations for NU 107′s Band of the Year three years in a row (2001, 2002 and 2003), and nomination for MTV’s Artist of the Year. Lee Nadela also won Bassist of the Year in 2001 at NU 107′s Rock Awards.

Recently, their sound has become more and more complex and less straightforward by adding more melodies without giving up the volume or the edge.

Because no one rocks harder than Slapshock, they are Splintr.com’s artist of the month! They’ll be all over Splintr.com! Check them out on our Screening Room very soon! And on June 26, 2010, they will be performing alongside Greyhoundz at the Rockoustic Series. Click here for details.

+/- Videos up on Splintr

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

If you’re a fan of indie music or +/- (plus/minus) specifically, and love watching them live, which is really the best way to listen to them, but you’re at home and you just need a fix, then we have something perfect for you.

We have 15 live performance videos and 2 music videos from +/-. Here, check them out. Click on images!

Far Into the Fields
Far Into the Fields

This song is as melodic as it is eerily calming even though they pulled off some really high notes. Their performance, save for some bad feedback, was pretty good. Far Into the Fields shows off +/-‘s ambient sensitive side.

She’s Got Your Eyes
She's Got Your Eyes

They kick things up a notch with She’s Got Your Eyes. They speed up the tempo a bit but keep the same reserved melody. The result is just mind-blowing. If you listen closely to the lyrics, they’re actually quite disturbing, which makes this song easily one of our favorites.

I’ve Been Lost
I've Been Lost

Awesome vid, awesome song – bursts of chunky grunge-inspired rock peppered among strings of their trademark smooth sound make this song extremely enjoyable.

You’ve Just Got it All
You've Just Got It All

A catchy riff and off kilter lyrics can’t ever be a bad thing.

If you want to watch the rest of their videos on splintr.com, click here. They’re also featured on our Screening Room.

And as always, don’t forget to join us on Facebook or follow our updates on Twitter. We’ve got bigger and brighter things coming your way soon.

+/- Plus/Minus Extended as Artist of the Month

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Due to insistent public demand, Splintr.com is extending +/- (Plus/Minus’) stint as the artist of the month. They’re blazing a trail right now through the Philippine music scene with their distinctive eclectic sound.

For those living under an oversized rock and don’t know who +/- (Plus/Minus) is, let us give you a little musical education. They are a Brooklyn-based band who can most closely be classified under the indietronica (indie electronic) genre and is composed of James Baluyut, Patrick Ramos, and Chris Deaner.

+/-

James Baluyut, the vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist, is of Filipino descent but was born in Detroit, Michigan. Joining him in the band is Filipino-American Patrick Ramos, an all around notable musician. Rounding up the group is their drummer, Chris Deaner. All of them are quite incredible musicians – both technical and soulful.

+/- started out when Teenbeat records got James Baluyut to record a whole album for release in 2000. Although, at the time, James was part of Versus as a guitarist, he recorded the album under the name +/-, and for the most part, it was a solo effort. Come 2001, before the release of the album, James was already touring with Patrick Ramos, Chris Deaner and Margaret McCartney. Margaret eventually left, though.

They’ve been touring extensively since then, especially in Asia and Europe. That actually explains why they were here recently. Well, that plus the fact that two members do have Filipino blood, and therefore Philippine music, in their veins. Up on the Splintr blog is their Manila tour diary. Click here to check it out.

As far as records go, they’re no slouch in that department either. For the better part of this decade, +/- has been churning eargasmic albums. Released in 2002, their self-titled debut album was under Teenbeat Records. You Are Here under Teenbeat Records soon followed. After leaving Teenbeat, they signed with Absolutely Kosher Records and they would go on to produce two more albums – Let’s Build a Fire (2006) and Xs on Your Eyes (2008).

Their music is difficult to describe, really. The indie attitude is definitely there, and they go against the flow for sure. Conventionality and Plus/Minus are so far apart, there could quite possibly be two galaxies of musical genres between them. Their tone is clean and crisp; their melodies are complex – doesn’t stop their songs from being catchy, though. Some of them, like Snowblind, you can even hum along to.

Here are a couple of their videos to give you an even better feel of what their music is like.
