Top‭ ‬5‭ ‬Bandcamp Releases For The Month Of June

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

Greetings and salutations.‭ ‬We interrupt your regular programming to deliver‭ ‬this collection of amazing albums that can be downloaded for free over at Bandcamp.‭ ‬Yes,‭ ‬it‭’‬s time again for our monthly Top‭ ‬5‭ ‬Bandcamp Release recommendation.‭ ‬This month‭’‬s list is probably one of the best ones we‭’‬ve compiled thus far.‭ ‬These albums range from some really good Filipino indie pop to a couple of the dirtiest rock n‭’‬ roll albums we‭’‬ve heard in recent years.‭ ‬And‭ ‬again,‭ ‬the best thing is you can download these albums for free‭!

Thank the music gods for free music.

1.‭ ‬Popscene MNL‭ ‬-‭ ‬“This Feels Like Summer‭”

This compilation was released in‭ ‬2010‭ ‬and features some of the best indie pop bands in the country.‭ ‬Included in this compilation are songs by such acts as Soft Pillow Kisses,‭ ‬Apple Orchard,‭ ‬The Sleepyheads and Outerhope‭; ‬the latter‭ ‬two being bands we‭’‬ve reviewed here on‭! ‬If you‭’‬re into feel-good music perfect for a hot summer‭’‬s day‭ (‬We know,‭ ‬it‭’‬s been raining like crazy here in Manila,‭ ‬but what the hell.‭)‬,‭ ‬then‭ ‬we suggest you download this album.

2.‭ ‬Harmonica Lewinski‭ ‬-‭ ‬“Who The Fuck Is Harmonica Lewinsky‭?‬”

This brilliantly named garage rock band hails from Rochester.‭ ‬They make some really cool fuzzy,‭ ‬gritty rock n‭’‬ roll that would make The‭ ‬13th Floor Elevators proud.‭ ‬Their music may be a pastiche of rock n‭’‬ roll history,‭ ‬but they‭’‬re really good at what they do.‭ ‬Hey,‭ ‬there‭’‬s even a cover/bastardization of The Beatles‭’‬ “I Wanna Be Your Man‭”‬ called‭ ‬“I Wanna Kill Your Man‭”‬.‭ ‬They‭’‬re clearly doing something right,‭ ‬from the band name,‭ ‬to their style of music and‭ ‬production.‭

3.‭ ‬Shakey Graves‭ ‬-‭ ‬“Roll The Bones‭”

Shakey Graves is not a band.‭ ‬Shakey Graves is just one man,‭ ‬and as evidenced by‭ ‬“Roll The Bones‭”‬,‭ he ‬is‭ ‬also a genius.‭ ‬The album opens with‭ ‬“Unlucky Skin‭”‬,‭ ‬an old-timey folk song complete with banjos,‭ ‬harmonicas,‭ ‬and lush vocal harmonies.‭ ‬Upon first listen,‭ ‬comparisons to folk musicians like Devendra Banhart,‭ ‬The Tallest Man On Earth,‭ ‬or even a more lo-fi version of Fleet Foxes come to mind.‭ ‬This album is a fine example of lo-fi folk done right.‭

4.‭ ‬Bearsled‭ ‬-‭ ‬“Raspberry Parade‭”

Are you ready from some punk rock‭? ‬Bearsled have managed to walk the fine line between the anger and nihilism of punk rock and the hedonistic fun of rock n‭’‬ roll.‭ ‬This album is good for two things:‭ ‬1.‭) ‬Pissing off your parents and‭ ‬2.‭) ‬Pissing off your neighbors.‭ ‬The guitars pierce your ears and the vocals border on annoying,‭ ‬but somehow Bearsled manage to make it sound good.‭ ‬They‭’‬re also‭ ‬surprisingly tight.‭ ‬There are times when the songs are in danger of being derailed by‭ ‬the chaos that ensues,‭ ‬but thankfully the band manages to keep things locked down.‭  ‬Recommended for fans of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion,‭ ‬Pussy Galore,‭ ‬and Minutemen.

5.‭ ‬Cruiser‭ ‬-‭ ‬Cruiser EP

There has been an influx of reverb-drenched surf pop bands in recent years.‭ ‬Bands like Real Estate,‭ ‬Beach Fossils,‭ ‬Youth Lagoon,‭ ‬and even garage-tinged bands like Girls or Best Coast have found a niche with their brand of summer-y guitar pop.‭ ‬The one-man‭ ‬band Cruiser is another addition to this particular trend‭ (‬the EP was produced by Jeremy Park,‭ ‬who also produced Youth Lagoon‭’‬s‭ ‬“The Year Of Hibernation‭)‬.‭ ‬This EP is guitar-driven indie rock at its best.‭

We hope you enjoyed this month‭’‬s selection of some of the best music from Bandcamp.‭ ‬Never forget to support these artists whenever you can,‭ ‬because after all…‭ ‬no artists‭ = ‬no music‭ = ‬no life.‭

A Look At Dong Abay‭’‬s‭ ‬“Rebulto‭”‬ +‭ ‬Exclusive Interview

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Dong Abay is not only one of the most important Filipino artists in recent‭ ‬years‭;‬ he‭’‬s also one of the smartest songwriters around.‭ ‬His lyrics run the gamut of being scathingly satirical to‭ ‬genuinely romantic,‭ ‬all written with‭ ‬a knack for wordplay and clever lines.‭ ‬From his work with the legendary band Yano,‭ ‬to the underrated Pan,‭ ‬and even to his ongoing solo career,‭ ‬Dong Abay is truly a unique artist with his own voice and his own story to tell.‭

Fete De La Musique‭ ‬2012‭ ‬Is Upon Us

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

It‭’‬s that time of year again.‭ ‬On June‭ ‬23,‭ ‬the Philippines‭’‬ finest‭ ‬musical‭ ‬acts of different genres will be invading Makati in what may very well be the biggest music festival in the country this year.‭ ‬Brought to us by the Embassy of France to the Philippines, the Alliance Francais de Manille,‭ and B-Side Productions, ‬Fete De La Musique is a yearly music event that showcases Filipino music at its finest.‭

For the first time Fete De La Musique‭’‬s main stage will be located at Makati Avenue,‭ ‬where a street party will be held featuring‭ ‬acts such as Brigada,‭ ‬Cynthia Alexander,‭ ‬Pepe Smith,‭ ‬Johnny Alegre‭ & ‬Affinity,‭ ‬the French DJ collective Chinese Man,‭ ‬and many more.‭ ‬Besides the main stage,‭ ‬there will also be different pocket venues hosting different genres organized by different productions.‭

Whatever style of music you enjoy,‭ ‬you‭’‬re bound to find something to your liking.‭ ‬Whether it‭’‬s at the Electronica stage‭ ‬hosted by Nomad Massive at Time,‭ ‬Renegade Collective‭’‬s Hip-Hop stage at KYSS,‭ ‬DOPE MNL‭’‬s Indie/Rock stage at B-Side,‭ ‬or any of the‭ ‬8‭ ‬pocket stages this year,‭ ‬there is indeed something for everybody.‭ ‬For one night,‭ ‬Makati will be Manila‭’‬s music‭ ‬Mecca for what may very well be the closest thing we‭’‬ll ever have to our very own version of South By Southwest.

The event will start at‭ ‬4‭ ‬in the afternoon and will last all throughout the night.‭ ‬Don‭’‬t pass‭ ‬up on the chance to watch some great bands especially since the admission is free.‭ ‬Go out,‭ ‬have fun,‭ ‬listen to some good music.‭ ‬You won‭’‬t regret it.‭

This Day In Music History: The Birth Of One Brian Douglas Wilson

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Brian Wilson was born on June 20, 1942 to Audree Neva and Murry Gage Wilson. He’s best known as the band leader and chief songwriter of The Beach Boys, a band he formed with his brother Carl and Dennis, and their cousin Mike Love. He’s also regarded as one of the best producers of all time due in no small part to his intricate arrangements and production techniques for the Beach Boys’ 60s output, most notably on the highly influential album “Pet Sounds”. Up to this day, “Pet Sounds” is still widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time.

Known for his eccentricities and mental instability as much as his talent, Wilson is remembered the most for his contributions to pop music. Brian Wilson is a mad genius, plain and simple.

Happy Birthday, Brian Wilson!

LOST CLASSICS:‭ ‬Dennis Wilson‭ ‬-‭ ‬“Pacific Ocean Blue‭”‬ (1977‭)

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Dennis Wilson‭’‬s‭ ‬“Pacific Ocean Blue‭”‬ is an anomaly.‭ ‬The album came out during the creative peak of The Beach Boys,‭ ‬and it was even released to critical acclaim.‭ ‬The album even managed to sell much as The Beach Boys‭’‬ “Love You‭”‬,‭ ‬which was released around the same time.‭ ‬And yet why do people consider it a lost classic‭?

There are a lot of factors,‭ ‬actually.‭ ‬But where do we start‭?

Igan D‭’‬Bayan‭’‬s‭ ‬“Mysterious Diseases‭”‬ to Open On July‭ ‬10

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Igan‭  ‬D‭’‬ Bayan‭’‬s art is the stuff of nightmares.‭ ‬Equal parts macabre and surreal,‭ ‬his paintings capture the darkest corners of the mind‭; ‬where deformities and afflictions are embraced and everything is covered in darkness.‭ ‬According to D‭’‬Bayan,‭ ‬this exhibit is his love letter to horror and sci-fi movies,‭ ‬although it‭’‬s more akin to the grim surrealism of The Cabinet Of Dr.‭ ‬Caligari than the b-movie camp of films like Plan‭ ‬9‭ ‬From Outer Space.‭

“Mysterious Diseases‭”‬ features a collection of portraits that are inspired by the strange beauty of the grotesque and the macabre.‭ ‬These portraits grab your attention with their stark imagery that play with our deepest and darkest fears.

The show is presented by The Pocket Universe Art Collective in cooperation with The Crucible Gallery.‭ ‬The opening cocktails is on July‭ ‬10,‭ ‬Tuesday,‭ ‬8‭ ‬p.m.,‭ ‬with performances by The Black Vomits,‭ ‬Turbo Goth,‭ ‬and‭ ‬Noli‭ & ‬The Tangeres,‭ ‬among other bands.

The‭ ‬exhibit will run until August‭ ‬4,‭ ‬2012.

For information,‭ ‬call‭ ‬+63929-8424055‭ ‬or The Crucible at‭ ‬635-6061.‭

The Pocket Universe Art Collective is at the second floor of SaGuijo Café‭ ‬+‭ ‬Bar,‭ ‬7612,‭ ‬Guijo St.,‭ ‬San Antonio Village,‭ ‬Makati City.‭

Backdraft To Play A Reunion Show on July‭ ‬14

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Backdraft may only have two albums‭ ‬under their belt but they have become one of the most beloved metal acts in the local music scene.‭ ‬The band‭ is comprised of‭ ‬Benedict Versoza on vocals,‭ ‬Mirt Togle and Ferdie Aquino on guitars,‭ ‬Tyrone Borromeo on bass and Jigs De Belen on drums.

Everything came together when the band was approached by a record executive during a dinner party and they were invited to record an album.‭ ‬Their debut album under Neo Records was a massive success and was a certified Gold record.‭

However,‭ ‬all was not well…

During a concert in Cebu in‭ ‬October of‭ ‬1995,‭ ‬Ferdie Aquino,‭ ‬the band‭’‬s guitarist,‭ ‬was rushed to the hospital because of a genetic heart disorder.‭ ‬The coma that resulted from heart disorder marked the end of his tenure with the band.‭ ‬At this moment,‭ ‬Ferdie Aquino is still on the road to recovery.‭

The band pushed on with a heavy heart,‭ ‬and eventually hired Anton Yap to be their new guitar player.‭ ‬Backdraft started writing‭ ‬their‭ ‬2nd album,‭ ‬“The Shadowland Deep‭”‬.‭ ‬The tour for‭ ‬“The Shadowland Deep‭”‬ lasted from‭ ‬1996‭ ‬to‭ ‬1997.‭ ‬It also turned out to be the last hurrah for the band.‭ ‬1997‭ ‬was the year when most of the band would graduate from college,‭ ‬and this was also when they decided to go their separate ways to pursue‭ ‬other careers.

15‭ ‬years later and the time is finally right for Backdraft‭ ‬to give it another go.‭ ‬On July‭ ‬14,‭ ‬the band will be performing for one night only at B-Side.

What better way to herald their return than with a Youtube clip of a‭ ‬“Virtual Jam‭”‬ of‭ ‬“La Propaganda‭”‬,‭ ‬with Benedict Verzosa,‭ ‬Mirt Togle,‭ ‬and Jigs De Belen jamming with bass player Tyrone Borromeo and Anton Yap who performed their parts while in Singapore and New Jersey respectively.

Technology is a beautiful thing.

The show will also feature performances from Paul Z,‭ ‬Happy Pill,‭ ‬The Ronnies,‭ ‬and‭ ‬RRV.‭ ‬All proceeds from the show will go to Ferdie Aquino to assist for his medical expenses.‭

“Splintr Pic of The Week – Nirvana”

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Today is the anniversary of Nirvana’s debut album “Bleach”, which was released on June 15, 1989.
