Inday Bote – The Arson EP

Monday, May 30th, 2011

For a band that was born after set of auditions within the UP Music Circle, Inday Bote sure has gone a long way. With two EPs and a good number of gigs in Manila and surrounding cities tucked in their well-decorated belt, the band has certainly paid their dues and passed the acid test of being a musical unit through the past four years. The current lineup features  Nina Cabangis on vocals, Sot Sotelo and Lloyd Cunanan on guitars, Enzo Zulueta on bass and Daryl “Sneaky G” Alvarez on the drum set.

This year, the band released their second recording – The Arson EP. The compilation is meant to be an introduction to just how the band approaches songwriting.

There is a good dose of variety on the release. No one would be able to criticize Inday Bote for sticking to one worn out approach to music – they certainly try to cover the bases.

The track ‘Four Less Bullets’ starts off with a very upbeat and jumpy tempo but it eventually retires to a soaring chorus – at least far as the guitars are concerned. It’s a very uplifting track that can be quite catchy even if you were just listening to it for the first time.

“Windburn’ goes all out the gates with the high octane pace that the band seems to be very able to pull off. Despite this penchant for a very rousing start, Inday Bote can also pull it back into a gorgeous and understated segment before exploding again in the chorus.

‘When The Night Falls’ – recorded twice for this release with an acoustic version to boot – has a very distinct punk and hard rock feel to it making the song one of the catchier tracks in this small collection of ditties. The acoustic version is a very different animal from the original – the feel and general tone feels diametrically opposite of the faster version.

Inday Bote is currently writing material for a full length album and given the potential this band is showing with their first two EPs, it seems like the next release will be worth waiting for.

Pinoy Musik Aid – May 28

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

UR 105.9 is set to stop airing in a couple of months but fortunately for fans of local music who are reeling from the loss of many big names in the music industry in the past couple of years, UR will continue to be an entity in the game as URFaceRadio. With this rebirth of sorts, UR has cooked up something big to launch this project off the ground. With the help of many sponsors and partners (along with Splintr), UR will be conducting six simultaneous gigs around the city on May 28 (Saturday) to officially usher in this new incarnation of the radio station that still seeks to give exposure to budding and established local musicians as well as give listeners a fresh alternative to the otherwise stale music choices on local radio.

The URFaceRadio Facebook Page has very good functionalities that would allow users to listen and even watch streams released by the station.

The main stage will be at Metrowalk Central Plaza in the Ortigas area while the satellite gigs will be at B-side (Malugay St., Makati), Sazi’s Bar (Espana), Molokai, Kalye Timog and Casa Nami. Show at Metrowalk starts 5PM! Admission is free!

See you there!

Make way for Hijo

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

The band Bamboo has been one of the biggest names in Pinoy rock and while their larger-than-life front man has been getting most of the attention, the rest of the band have always been more than able to pull their weight musically and creatively. With Bamboo Manalac off the roster after the band came public with their decision to part ways back in January, Nathan Azarcon – a rock heavy weight in his own right – has taken over the vocal chores. Bamboo is no more and the guys that have been left behind have chosen to pick up the pieces and draft new talent to form Hijo.

The new single Tama Ba Yun? hints at the very fresh and clean sound that Bamboo has always been known for. It might not be a good idea to draw much from the lyrics – give it a chance and tell us what you think. The words certainly hint at a very greedy persona with an insatiable desire for more.

The band’s current lineup includes Bamboo mainstays Azarcon, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado as well as Junji Lerma (Radioactive Sago Project) and Jay Orduna (on keyboards).

Blast from the past: Cynthia Alexander’s ‘Rippingyarns’

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

It’s hard to believe but Cynthia Alexander’s second album Rippingyarns is turning ten years old this year. It seems as if it was only yesterday when one of the icons of Philippine folk rock released a bold collections of acoustic ditties with very distinct insertions of different indigenous instruments from all over the world.

Rippingyarns was the much anticipated album after the critically-acclaimed Insomnia and Other Lullabys that featured now-classic tracks like Malaya and Comfort in Your Strangeness. Cynthia Alexander continued with her winning streak with Rippingyarns and she most notably left an impression with listeners with the very catchy and cryptic ‘Motorbykle’ that features one of the most interesting acoustic guitar flurries in recent memory. The song was so impressive that the song came out of nowhere to be named as the NU 107 Rock Awards Song of the Year of 2001. It was quite a bit of news since 2001 hearkened the peak of the so-called rap-metal movement in the Philippines.

There were many other great songs that was from this album – the songs ‘U & I’, ‘Daisy Chain’ and ‘The Weather Report’ all made it to the NU Midnight Countdown as the most requested songs for the week while the unreleased track ‘Intertwyne’ even won for Song of the Year at the Katha Awards. Other songs like ‘Walk Down The Road’, ‘Fly’, ‘Frost and Glass’ and ‘Flowers of Youth’ are also great despite being non-singles making Rippingyarns one of those few albums that you could listen through without skipping tracks.

It might be next to impossible to get a copy of a Rippingyarns CD but luckily, Cynthia Alexander still plays gigs from time to time. Given the way CDs are stocked and shuffled out of the record stores in the country, it would be hard to land a classic CD from ten years ago. Hopefully, you have a friend who was already into good music during that time who would be more than willing to show you ropes regarding that golden age of music.

The Dawn @ Jam Music Fest – 25 years in music!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

The Dawn will be celebrating their 25th year as a force in local rock at Jam Music Fest!  The show will be at Eastwood Central Plaza, Libis, Quezon. 7 PM. The Dawn is certainly in the pantheon of the most venerable rockstars that the country has ever seen and it would be a fitting tribute for them to be feted in a grand event. If you’ve ever sang along to any of their anthemic songs like “Iisang Bangka”, “Tulad Ng Dati” and the song “Enveloped Ideas”, please do try to come and rock hard to a band that has survived the best and worst times of the past quarter century. The band has gone through personel changes but you can count of The Dawn to play the songs that you know and love.

Other bands and artists for the show include Nyoy Volante, Imago, Sandwich, Peryodiko, General Luna, Rivermaya, Ebe Dancel, 6 Cyclemind and Lahi.

Splintr will be covering The Dawn’s set and the footage would be featured on the site soon!

Turbo Goth surges forward with “Destroy Us All”

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Turbo Goth has emerged as one of the most unique bands in the country today – not just because of their sound but also because of the fact that there are only two people on the roster (Sarah Gaugler and Paulo Peralta). The band challenges common perceptions on what a band should be and how many members there should be in one. Quite frankly, the sound that the duo of Sarah and Paulo produces is as good as any four-piece band out there – it seems like having Sarah in the vocals and Paulo manning the guitar/synthesizer and drum machine makes for a good combination.
